Educational Resources on the Internet

By Peggie Brown (written in 2001)

This article deals with some of the quality educational resources on the Internet of interest to legal professionals. Most of the resources listed here are free. As anyone who has been about the Internet for merely a few months knows, the Internet abounds with astounding resources. More of these types of educational resources for legal professionals are presented at Katsuey's Legal Gateway under the Educational category.

Co-Working
Bernie DeKoven organizes wonderful resources for learning how to deal with co-workers and life in general. In addition, the site provides links to resources that enable groups to collaborate and work together in a networking environment. Learn what "Technography" means and how you can incorporate the strategies of Technography to improve your communication.

EEOC Laws
While not a true tutorial site, the Employee Equal Opportunity Commission (EEOC) presents a comprehensive set of resources for employers and employees, enabling each the opportunity to know their rights and responsibilities under the laws. The EEOC also offers a wide variety of fee-based technical assistance and training programs at locations throughout the country geared to employers and employees in the private, state and local, and federal sectors.

Free Skills Tutorials
Free Skills offers tutorials for each of the components of the Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Access, FrontPage, PowerPoint, Outlook, Schedule, Internet Explorer and Exchange. In addition, tutorials are available for Visual Basic, Visual C++, Visual FoxPro, SQL Server, Project, Publisher, Works, Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT. Most of the individual tutorials offer both a basic course and an advanced course. The courses are free and may be viewed with the free Adobe Acrobat Reader.

The Law Of Information Privacy
Privacy is a huge and important issue in this age of the Internet. Employers and employees need information about their responsibilities and rights. Professor Marc Rotenberg of Georgetown University offers his course syllabus on line, a listing of suggested course reading materials and a presentation of course issues. Professor Rotenberg also provides references to additional reading material (some on-line and some published sources) concerning the Law of Information Privacy.

The Land-Grant Training Alliance
The Land-Grant Training Alliance site is for both Corel and Microsoft users. Delve into free training courses for either set of products and choose your version. The courses, also available for download, come with exercises and answers. Courses currently available include WordPerfect, Corel Presentations, Lotus Freelance Graphics, Lotus 123, Quattro Pro, Word, Access, and Excel. If nothing else suits you, try the courses on creating better newsletters or learn email techniques.

Internet Detective
The Internet Detective teaches legal professionals ways to assist determination of the reliability of resources by dissecting components within the URL address. This course takes approximately one to two hours and provides researchers the critical evaluative skills required to assess the quality of an Internet resource. Internet Detective uses interactive quizzes and exercises to keep the readers attention and allow assessment of the learning points.

Seminar Finder
Perhaps time is short and you just discovered you are a bit short on CLE hours. Check the Seminar Finder for locations and information on quick access to keynote speakers, trainers and consultants; leading management and business articles and essays; an extensive database of learning Web sites with reviews and ratings; hundreds of thousands of seminar, continuing education, and Web based training listings; and message boards for discussing and posting industry announcements, questions and trends.

Study Web
Not only will this site assist you and your children while preparing homework, but Study Web also includes courses of interest to adults. Perhaps you need a bit less stress in your life and fancy yourself as a music composer. Study Web has just the musical area for you to learn Dramatic Shapes, Parallel Fifths and Octaves. Atlapedia On-line might be just the tool you need to find statistical data and general information on a country or view physical and political maps for regions of the world is you need a geographic solution.  Look to the Study Web language and grammar area for improved writing skills, proper use of grammar and correct spelling.

Texas Bar CLE
The Texas Bar Association offers access to both on-line and on-site approved CLE for Texas lawyers. The on-line courses are $60.  Download brochures with Adobe Acrobat Reader to read descriptions of upcoming on-site seminars and locations. Several other states also have these types of resources available.

With these resources for learning, take the time to update your skills, learn new tips and tricks and broaden your horizons. Learning is a process that never ceases. It assists us in adapting to change, improving ourselves, discovering new processes and procedures and expanding our capacity to understand and communicate more effectively with others.
